Mr Jones completed high school in Elizabeth, South Australia in 1964, having come from the United Kingdom with his family when he was 13 years old.

He entered the Royal Military College Duntroon in 1965, graduating in December 1968 into the Royal Australian Infantry. He served with 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) for four years as a rifle platoon commander, mortar platoon commander and adjutant. Mr Jones served in Vietnam with 3RAR.

His subsequent postings included Queensland University Regiment, 5/7RAR as a company commander and later as commanding officer; tactics instructor at the Land Warfare Centre; and a three-year attachment to the United States Army based at Fort Lewis near Seattle in Washington State. 

He left the army in 1988 and went to work for Shell, based in Sydney. He spent 16 years with Shell in a variety of human resources positions including working in training and development, personnel, organisational development and industrial relations, culminating in the role of Human Resources Manager for the Shell refinery at Clyde. In 2004 he retired and moved to Burradoo, just south of Bowral in the Southern Highlands. 

Mr Jones and his wife, Dianne, have a son and a daughter, both married and now living in Sydney, and three grandchildren. His interests are working with Legacy and sport – playing golf and watching everything else, especially Rugby Union – as well as gardening, reading and bridge.
